Impressive Senufo divination object, carved from a single block of dense wood, 45 cm (1866 g). The upper section features the emblematic figure of the hornbill (Séjèn). The body is adorned with four hand-carved masks and intricate geometric engravings. Used in ritual rituals, it displays a heavily encrusted sacrificial patina, the result of decades of traditional use. It retains its original lateral divination openings, with traces of wear polished by use. Decorated with beads. Dating: Colonial period. Natural desiccation cracks in the wood are present, stable and consistent with the age of the piece. Provenance: Acquired in Dakar, Senegal, in the 1980s from a traveling antique dealer.
