Rare old wooden basket made of chestnut strips. Period: Early 20th century. Total height (with handle) 33 cm. Height (without handle) 19.5 cm. Width 21 cm. Length 37 cm. Very robust, (also used to transport logs). Lovingly cleaned, just a few stains and small cracks due to its great age... Careful and secure shipping the same day. Length 37 cm. __________________________________________________________ _________________________________________ Rare gathering basket from Southwest France with a very interesting history. The baskets were entirely handmade and required hours of meticulous work. First, branches from a young chestnut tree were picked in autumn and early winter. The wood was left to dry outdoors for a while to give the bark a slightly patinated look. To separate the bark from the wood, the branches were carefully baked in the domestic oven (these baskets were not made for commercial purposes, they were used by local workers as a means of exchange for other goods). The bark was then carefully separated from the wood into thin strips and woven to form the basket while still warm and pliable. Very few of these baskets were made exclusively by men (the work was considered too difficult for women) and used as gifts to family and friends or, as I said, in exchange for other necessities. It was a craft passed down from generation to generation as the family gathered around the fire during the long, cold winter months. This art form lost its popularity in 1925. Folk art at its best, this basket is in perfect condition, totally free of insect infestation. Lovingly cleaned, just a few signs of wear due to its great age...
