Product description
A striking sculptural ceramic object by Ingeborg Zenker, made in 1991 at the Zenker–Karthausen studio in Solingen, Germany.
The compact, almost architectural form is built around a strong geometric vocabulary: a heavy cuboid body, stepped relief decoration and a small rectangular opening at the top. The surface is covered in a beautifully textured blue-green / turquoise glaze, with subtle tonal variation that emphasises the relief and gives the piece considerable depth.
Although technically a vessel, the design reads much more like a small ceramic sculpture or architectural object. At approximately 2.5 kg despite measuring only 16 cm in height, it has an unusually substantial and monumental presence.
The underside is clearly marked:
ZK – Zenker–Karthausen studio mark
Z – Ingeborg Zenker
91 – dated 1991
Ingeborg Zenker was an established German studio ceramicist associated with the important post-war tradition of artist-led ceramics. Together with Gerburg Karthausen, she operated the Zenker–Karthausen studio in Solingen from the 1960s onward.
A particularly strong example for collectors of German studio ceramics, post-war design, Brutalist objects, architectural ceramics and 20th-century decorative art.
