The Ettore Sottsass 'Moonlight' floor lamp is a rare iconic design from 1971, manufactured by Arredoluce. This sculptural lighting object embodies the designer's avant-garde vision and forms an important piece in Italian design history.
This is a crucial transitional work from his radical pre-Memphis period — a sculptural, almost spiritual object that connects the utopian Space Age aesthetic of the 1960s with the powerful architectural language that would later define the Memphis movement.
Produced in a very limited edition, making it extremely rare. Sottsass, one of the most influential designers of the 20th century and founder of the Memphis Group, is represented in the permanent collections of MoMA New York, Centre Pompidou Paris, Victoria & Albert Museum London, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
The lamp is constructed from a sleek, geometric structure of metal and aluminium, finished in a contrasting black and white colour scheme. The vertical design houses a central light source that spreads a diffuse, atmospheric light, characteristic of the innovative approach to lighting in the seventies. The clean lines and minimalist use of materials emphasize the architectural quality of the object.
