Rare Hand-Cut Overlay Crystal Vase in Ruby – Cristallerie de Lorraine, 1930s
An exceptional and highly decorative crystal vase, crafted in the 1930s by the renowned Cristallerie de Lorraine, located in the historic French region celebrated for its centuries-old crystal-making tradition.
This piece is a superb example of fine hand-cut overlay crystal. A layer of deep ruby crystal is expertly overlaid on clear crystal and meticulously cut back by hand to reveal an intricate geometric lattice of faceted windows. The result is a dazzling interplay of light and color, where the rich ruby tones contrast beautifully with the brilliance of the clear crystal beneath.
The precision and density of the cutting reflect the work of highly skilled artisans, trained in the great Lorraine tradition, closely linked to prestigious manufactories such as Saint-Louis. During the mid-20th century, its artisans were recognized at the highest level, including the prestigious title “Meilleurs Ouvriers de France,” reflecting outstanding craftsmanship. Despite its relatively short existence, the factory produced pieces of remarkable quality until its closure in 1997, making its earlier works, especially from the 1930s, increasingly rare and sought after today.
