Private sellerProduct description
Rare and highly decorative French bull’s head wall trophy, entirely handcrafted in woven wicker, dating from circa 1950–1960.
This impressive sculptural piece retains its exceptional original polychrome finish, combining a deep black woven body, beautifully curved natural wicker horns, green eyes and red-orange details around the muzzle.
Its expressive design and intricate craftsmanship evoke the creative atmosphere of the French Riviera in the 1950s, particularly the artistic world of Vallauris and the fascination with bull and Minotaur imagery associated with Picasso and Cocteau.
A closely comparable example, featuring virtually identical construction and proportions but a different finish, was documented by Galerie Stimmung in Paris as a French Riviera work dating from circa 1950.
The unusual original polychromy and generous proportions distinguish this example from more commonly encountered natural wicker bull trophies.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Original polychromy throughout, with no restorations.
Dimensions: H 40 × W 37 × D 20 cm.
Period: Circa 1950–1960.
Origin: France, French Riviera.
Materials: Handwoven wicker with original painted finish.
An expressive piece of French mid-century decorative art, ideal for a refined Mediterranean, modernist or eclectic interior.
