Rare Antique: "The Merchant Georg Gisze" – Masterful Copy by Max Wutzke (1923)
A Piece of History: Where the Renaissance meets the artistry of the 1920s.
Bid on an exceptional work of art: A magnificent, hand-painted oil replica of the famous Holbein portrait, created in 1923 by the esteemed Berlin painter Max Wutzke (often also signed Wutzki).
Why this work is a special investment:
Craftsmanship: Wutzke was known for his ability to capture the Old Master glazing technique and the complex color depth of the originals almost perfectly. This is not a cheap reproduction, but genuine craftsmanship of the highest caliber.
Historical Context: Its creation in 1923 – the year of hyperinflation in Germany – lends the painting an additional historical dimension. Art was a significant store of value at that time.
Patina & Authenticity: After more than 100 years, this reproduction has developed its own unique character. The authentic craquelure and natural aging of the canvas lend the image an aura that a modern print can never achieve.
Decorative Presence: The motif of the Hanseatic merchant in his London trading post has radiated sovereignty, order, and success for centuries – ideal for prestigious offices or classic gentlemen's studies.
