Product description
RARE BILUMEN PRATER TABLE LAMP – IN THE STYLE OF ROBERT SONNEMAN (CA. 1990s)
The Bilumen Prater table lamp is a rare and compelling piece of postmodern lighting design, produced in the 1990s by the Italian manufacturer Bilumen, reportedly as a limited edition for Rabobank. While its precise origins remain debated, some sources attribute the design to Gregotti Associati, a prominent Italian design studio, while others point to a strong stylistic resemblance to the work of Robert Sonneman, the influential American lighting designer known for his sleek, modernist forms.
This lamp is a bold example of 1990s experimental lighting: a heavy glass base supports two minimal metal uprights that elegantly cradle a large, curved opaline glass diffuser. The clean lines and balanced structure give the lamp a sculptural quality, while the integrated dimmer offers warm, ambient light with customizable intensity. The fusion of industrial and organic elements recalls both Sonneman’s functional minimalism and Gregotti’s architectural rigor—making it a true conversation piece.
Although detailed documentation is scarce, the Bilumen Prater is considered a collector’s item due to its limited production and distinctive design. It is seldom seen on the market.
A striking and uncommon object for lovers of late-century European lighting design—perfect for collectors, architects, and enthusiasts of rare postmodern pieces.
Condition: The lamp is in good vintage condition, with some minor signs of age and use: a small chip on the underside of the base, light scratches on the opaline shade, and faint marks along the metal rim. These imperfections are subtle and do not detract from the lamp’s functionality or visual impact.
