Andreas Baader, photographed by Herbert Tobias (1924–1982) for the exhibition "Blicke und Begehren," Berlinische Galerie Berlin, 2008.
Tobias was a self-taught German photographer who began his career as a war photographer on the Eastern Front. In the 1950s, he made his breakthrough as a fashion photographer in Paris and Berlin, appearing in Vogue and Madame. Tobias was openly gay, and his homoerotic portraits of men have become iconic. He photographed celebrities such as Nico, Klaus Kinski, Zarah Leander, and Amanda Lear. His work can be seen in museums such as the Berlinische Galerie and the Deichtorhallen Museum.
Tobias had an unhappy relationship with Baader, whom he likely met in a gay bar in the early 1960s. Baader frequently had brief relationships, only to reject them casually.
Baader was a member of the terrorist organization Red Army Faction (RAF). He was Germany's public enemy number one. Before joining the radical left-wing activist movement, he trained as an artist for a while and held a few odd jobs.
After being convicted of a series of attacks and several murders, Baader was sentenced to life imprisonment. He committed suicide in 1977 at the age of 34.
