Product description
A beautiful oil on canvas depicting a portrait of a man smoking a cigarette, this mature and expressive work is by the Belgian painter Armand Massonet, a renowned figure in 20th-century figurative painting.
Dated 1964, this portrait belongs to the artist's later period, characterized by a great freedom of brushstroke and a pronounced psychological exploration. The sitter is rendered with dense and vibrant paint, prioritizing expression and human presence over strict academic likeness. The artist's characteristic handling of light is very evident, with a deliberately muted and nuanced palette, reinforcing the introspective nature of the subject.
The work is signed, dated, and presented in an antique Montparnasse frame from the first third of the 20th century, reused by the artist or the gallery—a choice perfectly consistent with his training and studio practices.
