Background Painting: On Saturday, November 19, 2022, the Gorssel-based painter Dorien Plaat was featured in the TV program Sterren Op Het Doek by Omroep Max. With two other painters, she was allowed to create a portrait of actress Monic Hendrickx. Dorien Plaat, next to Özcan Akyol, Monic Hendrickx second from the left, and the two other artists who participated in the program. In Sterren Op Het Doek, Özcan (Eus) Akyol talks to a well-known Dutch person while they are being portrayed by three artists. Afterwards, the portrayed person chooses one painting, and the two remaining paintings are auctioned for charity. Challenge When Dorien Plaat was asked if she wanted to participate in the program, she was immediately enthusiastic. "I always enjoy Sterren Op Het Doek and I felt honored to be able to participate," said Dorien. It wasn't entirely obvious, because realistic portraiture is not her specialty. In Dorien's recognizable and transparent work, people or animals are often depicted in a moving or vulnerable way, which can lead to fascination but also discomfort for the viewer. Not something most Dutch celebrities would immediately choose. "But you have to challenge yourself," said Dorien. "To create a beautiful portrait without losing my own style. I went for it." Monic Hendrickx As is customary in the program, the artists do not know in advance who they will be painting. When Monic Hendrickx appeared, Dorien did not immediately recognize her, but fortunately a fellow painter did. Monic is an actress and a four-time Gouden Kalf winner. She starred in films such as De Poolse Bruid (1998), Nynke (2001), and Het Zuiden (2004), and in the television series Penoza (2010–2017). Dorien: "It was a special challenge for me to capture this beautiful woman on canvas with my own style, but I was happy with the result." Ultimately, Monic did not choose Dorien's painting. Dorien's painting was sold for charity by Omroep Max. Dorien Plaat I was born in 1960 in Kumasi, Ghana, Africa. Due to my father's work, we lived in various countries. In our family, there was certainly attention for art. Wherever we lived, my parents always took us to sights, films, and museums. My father photographed a lot and can draw very beautifully. When we lived in Sri Lanka, there was a lot of attention for drawing at school. I still remember well that my mother once showed me a painting by Magritte (The Empire Of Lights). I was so impressed by it that I suddenly looked at things differently and began to understand that art can do that to you. I did not follow an art education. I wanted to do something social and was not yet ready for a creative education. That came later. I am self-taught. In my personal development process, I did receive help from two artists. Partly because of this, I found my own style. I keep trying something different, which I enjoy and find useful. Going deeper gives me even more satisfaction. The artists I worked with then told me that it takes an average of ten years for someone to find their own style. And that was indeed the case. After almost ten years, my artistic voice became clear. Artists who inspire me include Rustin, Soutine, Giacometti, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon, Cornelis Doolaard, and Pyke Koch. I pay attention to expression in eyes, feel and discover the torment, sometimes resulting in a struggle in the work. The feeling of 'not belonging' and 'distance' are intriguing elements to me. I like to watch people on the street, and I see my own struggles in them. That inspiration creeps into me and then gets under my skin. This is a process without words. I have had many solo exhibitions at, among others, Jaski Art Gallery, Nasty Alice in Eindhoven, in Galerie Den Haag, at Galerie De Queeste in Abele Watou (B), at Pulchri in Den Haag, and in the Jonkergouw Galerie. I found participation in the exhibition Broos in Bergkerk Deventer particularly special. This was a group exhibition with six nationally renowned female artists including Lotta Blokker, Francien Krieg, Eline Peek, and Lita Cabellut.
