She paints animals and humans in such a way that it seems as though they are unaware, or barely aware, of what is happening outside of them. Concentrated or perhaps dreamy, they reside in a fictional world or one inaccessible to the viewer. The backgrounds, which are sometimes a schematic representation of an environment or sometimes consist solely of patterns, emphasize this “fantastic” world. The depictions or portraits resemble a representation of reality but are not. It is not an account of a personal experience; it is not commentary; there is no truth. They are imaginary scenes, as if they were stills from a larger story. A moment from the lives of others. We do not know exactly what is taking place there, just as we do not know who we are dealing with.
