Product description
French patriotic medal from the First World War, dedicated to the Journée du Poilu (Soldier's Day) held on December 25 and 26, 1915, based on a model by the medalist Bargas. This Journée du Poilu was organized by the French Parliament at Christmas 1915 with a very specific goal: to raise funds to allow soldiers without families or with insufficient resources to enjoy their leave. Throughout France, posters, cards, badges, and medals were distributed for the benefit of this national solidarity effort. The obverse features a particularly evocative composition. In a battle landscape, French soldiers charge forward while a bugler occupies the foreground. The scene is placed at the center of a cross decorated with two crossed weapons and bearing the inscription 'JOURNÉE DU POILU – 1915'. The composition is signed Bargas, a medalist active in the early 20th century, several of whose works are preserved in the collections of the Musée Carnavalet and the Petit Palais in Paris. The reverse is particularly interesting. Beneath a laurel branch, the great battles of the first years of the conflict are recalled: The Marne 1914, Yser 1915, Verdun, The Somme 1916. These inscriptions place the production of this variant after 1916, even while the war was still ongoing. It belongs to those small patriotic objects that testify both to the mobilization of the home front, to the solidarity efforts in favor of soldiers, and to the construction of the memory of the great battles.
