Product description
Gouda Art Deco Wall Planter / Cachepot — 1930s A striking Dutch Art Deco wall planter from Gouda, dating from the 1930s, combining a sculptural form with beautifully executed hand-painted decoration. The warm ivory ceramic body is decorated entirely by hand with stylised flowers and foliage in rich shades of turquoise blue, green, ochre and deep black. The bold floral composition and graphic dark borders give the piece a particularly expressive Art Deco character. The reverse bears the original handwritten markings “Modica – Gouda-plateel – Oud-Gouda – Zuid-Holland.” Designed specifically to be hung on the wall, this unusual ceramic piece is both decorative and functional. It can be used as a wall planter for houseplants, as a vase for fresh or dried flowers, or simply displayed on its own as a decorative object. The planter is preserved in very good condition, with the hand-painted decoration remaining vivid and attractive. Gouda pottery occupies an important place in the history of Dutch decorative arts. From around 1900, the city of Gouda developed into one of the Netherlands’ major centres for decorative earthenware, known as Gouds plateel. Its remarkable rise began with the establishment of Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland in 1898 and was soon followed by numerous workshops and factories. During the 1920s and 1930s in particular, Gouda pottery became an important local industry and was widely exported internationally. Gouda ceramics are especially admired for their hand-painted decoration and distinctive use of colour, evolving from the flowing naturalistic motifs of Art Nouveau towards the more stylised and graphic vocabulary of Art Deco. This wall planter is a charming example of that decorative tradition: its unusual architectural form, bold floral ornament and vibrant palette make it both a collectible piece of Dutch ceramic history and a striking accent for a contemporary or eclectic interior. It would also make a wonderful gift for a collector or anyone with an appreciation for unusual and authentic vintage design. Will be well packaged and protected
