A cylindrical shaft placed on the floor, an overhanging hemispherical cap that pivots on its axis to direct the light. Two elementary volumes, no visible connections, no ornamentation.
In 1972, Gae Aulenti designed for Artemide a family of three molded ABS lamps — Pileino table lamp, Mezzo Pileo, Pileo floor lamp — which features the same silhouette at three scales. The model belongs to the period when molded plastic ceased to be an economic substitute to become, for Italian publishers, a design material in its own right.
Period example in the floor version, the tallest of the three variations. It bears the original manufacturer's marking under its base: S.p.A. Artemide Milano — modello Pileo-Mezzo Pileo — design Gae Aulenti — made in Italy.
