Product description
Pierre Mazairac was a Dutch furniture and interior designer who became widely recognized in the 1970s for his clear, functional approach to design. Working closely with fellow designer Karel Boonzaaijer, he helped shape a generation of modern Dutch furniture defined by simplicity, balance and everyday usability. Together, they developed designs that were rational and understated, yet warm and human in character. An important foundation for their work was laid during their time at UMS Pastoe. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Pastoe was evolving from a traditional furniture manufacturer into one of the leading modern design brands in the Netherlands. Mazairac and Boonzaaijer played a key role in this transformation by introducing a design philosophy centered on modularity, efficiency and industrial production. At Pastoe, they created a wide range of furniture, including storage systems, tables and seating, all characterized by flexibility, clarity of construction and long-lasting quality. Their designs were produced in large numbers and became part of everyday Dutch interiors, helping to define Pastoe’s modern and architectural identity. One of their notable later designs is the SM-01 Nomada chair, created in the 1970s for Hennie de Jong International. The chair features a light steel frame combined with a restrained upholstered seat and back, reflecting the minimalist and industrial spirit of the era. Designed to be practical, comfortable and visually calm, the Nomada was suitable for both domestic and contract environments. Today, the SM-01 Nomada is appreciated as a timeless example of Dutch modern design. Together with their influential work for Pastoe, it illustrates Mazairac and Boonzaaijer’s lasting contribution to twentieth-century furniture design, valued for its honesty, functionality and enduring aesthetic. Around the metal frames, there is some black paint loss and small scratches in certain areas — signs of wear that are typical for this type of furniture.
