Product description
Superb wine pitcher (or handled jug) with a
capacity of 50 centiliters (indicated by the
engraved "1/2" fraction), produced by the illustrious
German manufacturer Marzi & Remy in the heart of the
famous Westerwald ceramic region.
This historic salt-glazed stoneware piece is
distinguished by its heraldic and floral decoration in
strong cobalt blue relief, superbly contrasting
with traditional grey clay. The front face
features a large molded cartouche displaying the
Epicurean maxim in French: "Le vin
dissipe la tristesse!" (Wine dispels sadness!). This famous saying is
a direct reference to the air of the Bacchic song
from Ambroise Thomas's opera Hamlet (1868).
The base shows its original molded marking:
the mold shape number "2956" as well as the
authenticity mention "MADE IN GERMANY".
A highly decorative Rhenish folk art piece, sought after
by collectors of Westerwald pottery.
