The PH 80 floor lamp by Louis Poulsen gives Poul Henningsen’s approach to light a distinctive architectural silhouette. Created after his death as a tribute to the designer, the model sets a broad, gently curved white shade above smaller overlapping shades and crowns them with a red reflector. On this example, a slender chrome-plated stand and dark circular base give the expansive shade an elegant visual balance.
The shades do more than establish the lamp’s profile. Their opal-white surfaces diffuse the light, while the red reflector adds warmth above them. The photographs show how the composition changes when illuminated: the lower shades glow softly and the red becomes a vivid accent at the top. Unlit, the same contrast of white, red and black gives the lamp a clear graphic presence.
The PH 80 brings together the qualities that make Henningsen’s lighting so compelling: the arrangement of shades shapes both the light and the object seen in the room. Here, the generous sweep of the upper shade is held in check by the narrow stand, making the lamp expressive without losing its poise. A worn Louis Poulsen label remains on the upper reflector.
