A Highly Distinctive And Exuberantly Coloured “Hip Hop” Armchair Designed By Dutch Artist And Designer Peter Van Zoetendaal For Dutch Seating Company, Dating From The Early 1990s. One Of Van Zoetendaal’s Most Recognisable Furniture Designs, The Hip Hop Is An Expressive Example Of Dutch Postmodern Design, Characterised By Its Sculptural Silhouette, Generous Proportions And Bold Use Of Colour.
This Particularly Striking Example Is Upholstered In A Vivid Combination Of Deep Navy Blue, Burgundy Red, Golden Yellow, Forest Green And Warm Ivory. The Contrasting Colours Emphasise The Chair’s Distinctive Architectural Form, With Its High, Gently Inclined Backrest And Dramatically Shaped, Wing-Like Armrests. The Unusual Colour Blocking Gives The Piece A Playful, Almost Theatrical Quality, While Its Generous Proportions And Enveloping Form Make It An Exceptionally Comfortable Lounge Chair.
The Chair Is In Good Vintage Condition, With Visible Signs Of Previous Use Consistent With Its Age. There Are Some Light Scratches And Surface Marks To The Leather Upholstery, Particularly Visible On The Seat And Armrests, As Well As Some Gentle Signs Of Wear To The Leather Surfaces. These Have Been Left Untouched And Form Part Of The Chair’s Authentic Character And Patina. Please Refer To The Detailed Photographs For A Clear Impression Of The Condition.
Despite These Signs Of Use, The Chair Retains Its Strong Visual Presence And Distinctive Original Character. In Particular, The Exceptionally Bold Multicoloured Upholstery And Original Colour Combination Make This A Particularly Interesting Example Of The Design. A Rare And Highly Characterful Piece Of Dutch Postmodern Furniture, It Makes A Strong Statement As A Standalone Design Object And Would Be Equally At Home In An Eclectic, Contemporary Or Memphis-Inspired Interior.
