Product description
Peter Paul Rubens (Siegen, June 28, 1577 – Antwerp, May 30, 1640) was a Southern Netherlandish painter of Flemish Baroque, draftsman, tapestry designer, and diplomat, active in Antwerp. He was also known as Pieter Paul, Pieter Pauwel, or Petrus Paulus. Rubens began as a page to Lalaing in Oudenaarde, studied with three Flemish painters, and subsequently offered his services successively to the Court of Mantua, Archdukes Albert and Isabella of Brussels, and Ferdinand, who succeeded Isabella as governor of the Southern or Spanish Netherlands. He also acted as a diplomat for them. Rubens painted many altarpieces, assisted by a large studio in Antwerp, but he also depicted the life story of Maria de' Medici in the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris and that of the English King James I in Whitehall in London. Rubens also created works for the Spanish Kings Philip III and Philip IV. He had a beautiful house on the Wapper, the 'Rubens House', and later bought 't Steen Castle. Rubens studied the art of Antiquity and the Renaissance throughout his life and used many mythological motifs in his art. In particular, Titian of the Venetian School was a great example for him. He had close contacts with the Jesuits and dedicated himself heart and soul to the Counter-Reformation and the glorification of various individuals. Rubens married twice, to Isabella Brant and Helene Fourment, and had eight children with them. A beautiful etching signed in the lower right corner: P.P.Rubbens by the Southern Netherlandish / Belgian artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), featuring a portrait of his son Nicolas. The original was created around 1619 and hangs in the Albertina Museum in Vienna (Austria). Hand-signed on handmade paper. Year unknown, probably from ca. 1900.
