Since 1998, Paul Smulders (Breda, 1962) has been exploring the boundaries between the photographic and the painted image in his own way. Using photocopying and the computer, he converts existing images into grid patterns that he prints on the canvas. Such `transfers` and painted parts are alternately superimposed, resulting in layered images.
Although Paul Smulders also uses oil paint and spray lacquers, the painter mainly uses acrylic paint and in particular industrial acrylics, which have different properties. Smulders paints wet in wet, where certain paints interact aggressively and the mixture seems to separate. He shows himself master by turning these unpredictable reactions to his will.
Paul Smulders' works are a tension of loose painted parts in combination with a tight graphic pattern. The contrast between abstract and figurative also continues to play a role.
Their canvases seem to divide themselves into several levels, which, however, reinforce each other.
The artist knows how to make connections in a fascinating way between his subjective painting style and the objective nature of images from various media.
