The world-famous "Amsterdammer" was designed by Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1978) and produced by Pastoe, a company known for its high-quality cabinets for over 100 years.
The cabinet, with its distinctive ribbed roller door, has become a design classic.
The name of this cool sideboard is no coincidence; the design is a nod to those iconic Amsterdam bollards found everywhere on the sidewalk.
These bollards were originally installed because carriages would collide with building facades.
Aldo van den Nieuwelaar (1944-2010) was an architect and industrial designer.
Several of Van den Nieuwelaar's designs are (or were) part of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
This piece comes from the first owner. Custom-made in the 1970s in one of the original Pastoe colors from that time.
