The Utrechtsche Stoel- en Meubelfabriek (UMS) was founded on April 13, 1913, in Utrecht. Entrepreneur Frits Loeb (1889-1959) first sold his chairs at the Ganzenmarkt in Utrecht. UMS grew rapidly and became a large factory with furniture production and sales locations throughout the country. After the Second World War, the company sold furniture under a different brand name: PasToe (passe partout). During that period, Cees Braakman succeeded his father as general manager and designer. From the beginning, Pastoe made furniture for the general public. In the 1950s, Pastoe focused on storage furniture and cabinets, and later chairs were also produced. The starting point always remained: pure design and artisanal quality.
