H 18.5 × W 5.6 cm Combined weight: 200 g Mudra: Abhaya mudra Pair of Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhas Two closely matching Sri Lankan wooden Buddha statues, both standing with the right hand raised in Abhaya mudra, the gesture of protection and fearlessness. In both figures, the left hand holds the edge of the monastic robe at the shoulder. The statues follow the same sculptural scheme: a slender vertical silhouette, long linearly incised robe folds, elongated earlobes, a high flame-shaped ushnisha, and a low round lotus-shaped pedestal. At the same time, the face, proportions, and details of the robe and hands are not entirely identical. They are therefore not two copies from a single mold, but a compelling companion pair of individually carved figures. Surface and character The dark hardwood has a black-brown finish with warm brown tones on the raised and worn areas. The signs of age differ slightly per statue, which is consistent with individual use and storage. One statue still bears a fragment of an old paper label on its underside. Condition Both statues are in good old condition with natural signs of use and surface wear, small irregularities, and localized loss of the dark finish.
