Product description
Pair of hand-painted vases in Castelli Ceramic, made in the 1950s. Diameter 16 cm, height 23 cm. Castelli ceramics represent one of the excellences of Italian artistic craftsmanship, with a centuries-old tradition dating back to the 16th century. Castelli, a small village in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, is the production center for these ceramics. The Castelli ceramic tradition reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries, when local workshops produced works of the highest quality for European courts. Families of ceramists such as the Grue, Cappelletti, and Gentili contributed to making Castelli ceramics famous. Castelli ceramics are characterized by elaborate and lively decorations, ranging from floral and landscape motifs to mythological and religious scenes. The technique used is maiolica, with tin-glazed enamels that give the ceramics a brilliant and luminous appearance. Among the most recurring subjects are the "istoriate" (storied ceramics), which depict complex narrative scenes, and the "faenzare," with decorations inspired by Faenza ceramics. Castelli ceramics are present in important museums worldwide, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The Castelli ceramic tradition is still alive today, thanks to the work of numerous local artisans who continue to produce high-quality pieces.
