Pair of antique Thai bronze Buddhas in Lanna style Dimensions: A: H 9.7 × W 7 cm · B: H 10.1 × W 7.1 cm Weight: 300 g total Material: Bronze / copper alloy Period: 19th century Origin: Thailand, Northern Thai / Lanna tradition Iconography: Buddha Shakyamuni in bhumisparsha mudra Earth-Touching Buddha Both small figures depict Shakyamuni seated with his right hand pointing towards the earth and his left hand in his lap. This bhumisparsha mudra refers to the moment when the Buddha calls upon the earth as a witness prior to his enlightenment. The curled hair, ushnisha, long earlobes, and simple monastic robe are consistent with the Northern Thai sculptural tradition. A Historical Pair The two bronzes are closely related in size and composition, but visibly differ in facial features, casting details, and patina. They are therefore offered as a historically assembled pair and not as two completely identical castings. Together, they form a strong and attractive ensemble of small Thai devotional figures. Old Casting and Patina The figures are hollow-cast. The open undersides show irregular old casting structures, corrosion, and deposits. The surface features dark, brown, and locally greenish patina zones, wear, and signs of age. The complete photo series documents both figures from all angles and also shows their undersides.
