Pair of antique Burmese Buddha statues from the Konbaung period Origin: Myanmar (Burma), Mandalay region Dating: approx. 1750–1825 Material: ritual papier-mâché, lacquer, and old gilding remnants Dimensions: Statue A: H 65.5 × W 31 cm – 3.5 kg, Statue B: H 64.5 × W 30 cm – 4.0 kg Total weight: 7.5 kg Mudra: Bhumisparsha mudra An exceptional Burmese pair This rare pair of seated Buddha statues belongs to the ancient Burmese ritual sculpture tradition of the late 18th and early 19th century. Both figures depict the Buddha in Bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching hand gesture referring to the moment of enlightenment. The statues follow the same iconographic canon but are not entirely identical. Differences in the shape of the flame-like ushnisha, base, and surface details give each statue its own character and indicate separate manual production within the same tradition. Ritual construction and surface The sculptures are constructed from lacquered papier-mâché with internal organic reinforcement. The surfaces bear old red and black lacquer layers, remnants of gilding, natural wear, and mineral deposits. The light construction in proportion to their size is consistent with this traditional ritual technique. One statue still bears its original export label. The second statue has the later dating 19 05 51 on the back, a historical addition unrelated to the manufacturing date of the statue itself. Documentation The pair includes an official Thai export permit. Both statues have also been previously examined with UV, microscopic, and internal inspection. The present lacquer, gilding remnants, patina, and internal deposits are recorded in that documentation. Condition Antique condition with clear signs of age and use, wear to lacquer and gilding, localized surface damage, and deposits. The statues are offered as a pair and are in stable condition for display.
