Two images, two moments whose names and circumstances have long been forgotten, yet they have reached us more than a century after their creation, still preserved in their small brass frames. The first photograph shows a group of six people gathered outdoors. Three women and three men posed in front of the lens, likely during an outing, a family gathering, or a stay. The long dresses, hats, parasol, and men's suits allow us to place this scene at the end of the 19th century, around the years . Behind them, lush vegetation and a balustrade complete this portrait whose context now eludes us. The second image shows the interior of a church, photographed from the nave looking towards the choir. The rows of pews lead the eye to the altar and stained-glass windows, while a few silhouettes are still discernible within the edifice. Perhaps a memory of a visit, a journey, or a significant place for the owners of these photographs. The photographic process itself makes this set particularly interesting. The images are directly on glass plates. Depending on the orientation, light, and the background against which they are viewed, their appearance changes, and the image can take on the look of a negative before reverting to a positive reading. This principle is reminiscent of the ambrotype, a 19th-century photographic process where a negative image on glass appears visually positive when viewed against a dark background. In the absence of a technical examination of the plates, we prefer to refer to them as ambrotype-type photographs on glass. The two plates have been preserved in their original stamped brass frames, adorned with a small repetitive frieze and still fitted with their suspension chains. The brass has naturally darkened and developed a patina, which has been intentionally preserved.
