Product description
Pair of terracotta sculptures with anthropomorphic grotesque mask decorations, made in the 1950s. Dimensions: Ø 27 cm, Ø 17 cm, h 22 cm.
A pair of decorative terracotta elements of Italian manufacture from the 1950s, characterized by sculptural workmanship inspired by the classical ornamental repertoire. The front features an anthropomorphic grotesque mask framed by volutes and surmounted by a large fluted palmette. The intentionally textured modeling and the unglazed surface, in the natural tones of terracotta, give the two elements a character that is both archaic and sculptural. The reinterpretation of motifs from classical and Renaissance architecture is part of the rediscovery of craftsmanship and decorative arts that characterized a portion of Italian production in the post-World War II period. Originally conceived as ornamental elements, today they can be seen as small decorative sculptures, capable of bringing the material presence and irregularity of artisanal craftsmanship into contemporary spaces.
