Monumental Pair of Chinese Bronze and Cloisonné Pixiu Origin: China Period: Late Qing Dynasty, c. 1880–1910 Material: Bronze with cloisonné enamel, glass inlay, and remnants of gilding Dimensions per figure: L 49 × H approx. 37 × W 26 cm Weight: 22.4 kg and 25 kg – total 47.4 kg Depiction: Pair of Pixiu Guardian Figures Pixiu as Guardians This monumental pair depicts Pixiu, mythical Chinese guardian creatures traditionally associated with protection, prosperity, and wealth. Both creatures stand powerfully on four legs, depicted with open mouths, pronounced manes, wing-like forms, and curling tails. Bronze and Cloisonné The heavy bronze bodies are richly decorated with cloisonné enamel in floral and geometric patterns. Remnants of gilding and glass inlay are visible in areas. The combination of heavy bronze casting, enamel, and decorative finish lends the set a distinctly monumental character. Surface and Condition The surfaces show old patina, oxidation, wear, and craquelure in parts of the enamel. Minor losses and signs of age are present, consistent with the age and scale of the figures.
