Product description
A matching pair of Chinese temple lions, also known as Foo Dogs or Shishi, made of a heavily reddish-brown patinated copper alloy. The two guardians form the traditional male and female combination: one with the brocade ball and one with the cub. Object Details Origin: China Dating: second half of the 20th century, approx. 1970–1990 Material: copper alloy / bronze with dark reddish-brown patina Dimensions: A H 16 × W 6.5 cm; B H 15.5 × W 6 cm Weight: 2.2 kg total Foo Dogs as Protectors The lions stand on tall stepped pedestals with leiwen or meander bands and archaizing panel decoration. Within the Chinese sculptural tradition, such pairs are placed as guardians at entrances and important spaces. The ball refers to authority and order; the cub emphasizes protection and continuity. Execution and Condition The dark brown patina is lighter and coppery in prominent areas, which strongly highlights the modeling of the head, mane, and paws. The metal pedestals are weighted at the bottom with mineral filling. The pair is in good vintage condition with normal surface traces consistent with its age.
