Pair of Chinese Water Buffalo with Herdboy Figures Dimensions: A: H 20.2 × W 18.5 cm · B: H 19.2 × W 19.5 cm Weight: 1.6 kg total Material: Carved hardwood with inlaid eyes Period: First half 20th century, approx. 1920–1950 Origin: China Depiction: Herdboy on water buffalo Classic Chinese motif This matching pair features two powerful water buffalo with young herders on their backs. The buffalo and herdboy form a beloved subject within Chinese artistic tradition, associated with rural life, simplicity, and harmony between man and nature. Finely carved hardwood The animals are vividly rendered with deeply curved horns, inlaid eyes, and an exceptionally finely incised coat. The separately modeled herder figures wear traditional clothing and headwear. Both groups rest on openwork, rock-shaped wooden bases. Old patina and signs of wear The hardwood has a warm dark reddish-brown patina with natural wear and minor signs of age. The underside shows an old finish and, on one figure, remnants of a paper label. The extensive photo series documents both figures from all sides, including details and undersides.
