The Ice Cream Parlor 1 & 2 – Paul Megens
These two imposing canvases, measuring 140 x 80 cm, immediately draw attention due to their brutal, almost cartoonish style and explosive use of color. Here, Megens employs a visual language reminiscent of the Cobra movement combined with modern Pop Art: unpolished, cheerful, and a tad rebellious.
Painting 1: The Man with the Sunglasses (Blue background)
In the top canvas, we see a character with a distinct personality. Against a bright blue sky and a minimalist green grass line stands a figure with:
Striking details: A bright green, spiky hairstyle and large, red sunglasses that completely hide the eyes.
Facial expression: The drawn mustache and the protruding tongue (missing a tooth) give the figure a mischievous, summery look.
The Ice Cream: He is holding a waffle with three scoops of ice cream in the flavors of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. The black outline of the hand and the horn emphasizes the graphic style of the work.
Painting 2: The Smiling Figure (Yellow background)
