Product description
This painting by Max Fabian, titled 'Zigeunerin' (Gypsy Woman), is a striking example of figurative art from 1904 created by Max Fabian. Max Fabian (1873–1926) was a respected German-Jewish painter and printmaker. He was part of the Berlin art scene around the turn of the century. Fabian studied at the prestigious Berlin Art Academy between 1891 and 1900. He was taught by renowned masters such as Franz Skarbina. Between 1900 and 1905, he was one of the select master students of the famous painter Arthur von Kampf. In 1914, he traveled to Poland and Russia as a volunteer war painter. The encounter with Jewish culture there left a deep impression and influenced his later graphic work.
The work depicts a subdued portrait of a Gypsy woman, in which the expressive brushstrokes and warm use of color draw attention.
The artwork is created using oil paint on canvas and is framed in a classic wooden frame with decorative edges. The composition is dominated by earthy tones such as brown, red, and green, contributing to the authentic atmosphere of early twentieth-century realism. The signature and date are clearly visible in the upper right corner.
The painting is in a condition commensurate with its age, while retaining its historical character. The original finish and patina contribute to the authenticity of the piece.
