Product description
Original painting by Jules Gaubergen. Titled "Silent Evening". Juliaan (Jules, Julien) Van Gaubergen was a Belgian painter born and died in Aarschot (1921–1984). At a young age, he attended evening classes at the Drawing Academy in Aarschot for several years, but developed largely autodidactically. He debuted in an expressionist style. He undertook various study trips, including to Italy, and visited important museums at home and abroad. He became acquainted with the work of Paul Cézanne, which led to a brief period of experimentation with Cubism. During that period, monumental works emerged that glorified nature and depicted several saintly figures. Soon, all his attention turned back to man, nature, and the landscape, and he developed a personal style that was strongly aligned with Flemish Expressionism and Permeke. In 1955, he became a member of the Groep Idee, together with J. Cantré, E. Tytgat, P. Mara, and P. Nolens, among others. From around 1963, his (undulating) landscapes with grand cloud formations and distant horizons, flower arrangements, scenes from the life of the common man caught in his everyday activities, old crafts, and the typical but gradually disappearing rural life of yesteryear emerged. From the press: ‘The vast, rolling landscape of the Hageland, which comes to full richness in his work, has always impressed him.
