The tile was produced at the prestigious German Art Nouveau tile factory TONWERKE OFFSTEIN.
The company was founded in 1899 by Dr. Lossen, but production peaked between 1900 and 1913. During this period, tiles were pressed, fired and glazed with mineral colors that still retain their vibrant luster.
Until its bankruptcy in 1934, the company exported its tiles to Cuba, Australia and Malaysia. These export tiles were only half an inch thick to save space and weight on ships.
Today, "Tonwerke Offstein" is synonymous with collectors of Art Nouveau tiles because of the quality and beauty of the wall tiles, which are preserved as rarities in old houses.
