Old Indian Buddha Statue with richly elaborate Torana A seated Buddha from India, made of a copper alloy and dating from the 20th century. The statue, together with the tall, openwork torana and the stepped throne, forms a distinct altar composition. Object Details Origin: India Period: 20th century Material: Copper alloy Dimensions: H 22 × W 11.5 cm Weight: 1.6 kg Mudra: Right hand in Vitarka mudra; left hand in Dhyana Construction: Hollow cast, open base Iconography and Execution The Buddha sits in meditation on a layered lotus and throne base. The right hand is raised in Vitarka mudra, the gesture of teaching and transmission of knowledge, while the left hand rests relaxed in the lap. Behind the figure rises a richly openwork prabhavali or torana. At the top is a kirtimukha, flanked by makara- and yali-like guardian figures and other animal motifs. The front of the plinth features decorative panels, hanging ornaments, and a triangular element with a wheel motif. Surface and Condition The copper-colored surface displays a warm, aged appearance with dark deposits in the recessed areas and natural signs of wear on the prominent forms. The open base reveals the hollow cast construction and old casting and core remnants. The piece is in good antique condition with an attractive, natural character.
