We are pleased to present this oil on canvas painting from the 18th-century Italian school. A splendid religious painting depicting the iconography of the Immaculate Conception, Mary born without original sin. The center of the painting features the full-length figure of the Virgin Mary, floating in an ethereal, golden space. She wears a red robe (often associated with human nature or the blood of Christ) and is wrapped in a large, voluminous blue cloak (symbolizing divinity, heaven, and purity). Her hands are crossed on her chest in a gesture of humility and acceptance. Her gaze is gently downward. The figure is surrounded by a crown of bright stars around her head and rests her feet on a crescent moon and a serpent, surrounded by clouds. On either side of the Virgin, several heads of winged cherubs (angels) emerge from the clouds, gazing at her. A work rich in religious symbolism. The crown of stars represents the twelve apostles, symbols of the Church itself, of which Mary is the mother and central figure. The hands crossed on the chest symbolize acceptance of divine will and profound inner devotion, highlighting Mary's role as "servant of the Lord." The crescent moon represents the fickleness and time of earth; Mary, standing upon it, demonstrates her superiority over earthly things. The serpent crushed beneath the Virgin's feet is the symbol of Satan and original sin. Mary triumphs over evil, being "Immaculate," the only human creature untouched by sin. The angelic heads emerging from the clouds and the warm, golden light pervading the background indicate that the scene is not taking place on earth, but in a purely celestial and spiritual dimension. A marvelous painting for its pictorial quality and profound religious message. The work exhibits the typical characteristics of Italian sacred art with a very common devotional subject. If you love ancient Italian sacred art, you absolutely must add this splendid painting to your collection. The work is presented in a gilded wooden frame that perfectly matches the painting, although it is from the 20th century. The painting is in good overall condition, consistent with an older work with a rich history. It has been relined and shows some traces of restoration on the painted surface.
