Product description
Work on paper signed O. Bellet, attributed to Octave Bellet, a painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, depicting a hunter returning to a house in a rural landscape. The scene, known as Le Retour (The Return), shows a brown-toned building, a figure accompanied by an animal, and a vast countryside under a cloudy sky. The deliberately muted palette, dominated by grays, earth tones, and greens, is enlivened by a free and expressive touch. The treatment of the trees, sky, and architecture gives the whole a particularly intimate atmosphere. The work bears the signature “O. Bellet” in the lower right. The name “O. Bellet” also appears on the reverse of the frame, accompanied by a very faded old inscription seemingly mentioning Grenoble. This element is consistent with Octave Bellet's known activity in the Grenoble region and with several landscapes attributed to him. The technique appears to be watercolor on paper, probably gouache or a mixed technique combining washes and opaque highlights. The surface shows visible variations and material superpositions, compatible with an original hand-painted work. The work is presented under glass, in a beige passe-partout and a wooden frame with gilded and silvered finishes. Overall height: 40 cm. Overall width: 46 cm. Depth: 2 cm. Visible dimensions: 23 × 30 cm. Satisfactory general vintage condition. The passe-partout shows yellowing, small stains, and traces of age. The frame finish has some signs of wear. The cardboard and backing paper on the reverse are stained, with localized tears and detachments. The old inscription on the reverse is partially erased. A work of character, both sober and narrative, representative of rural landscape painting from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
