This wall crucifix soberly combines wood and metal in a balanced composition, characteristic of French religious production from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The oak cross is adorned with inlaid brass fillets that run along the four arms, bringing a discreet golden touch to the dark wood. The small natural knots in the oak, visible on the upright, contribute to the authentic character of the piece. The Christ figure, cast in brass, is beautifully modeled. The crown of thorns, the draped perizonium, and the suppedaneum are carefully rendered, in the tradition of popular religious statuary that sought to combine quality craftsmanship with accessibility. The brass INRI titulus is affixed to the top of the cross. A beautiful object for domestic devotion, to hang in a bedroom, entryway, or library, or to integrate into a collection of antique spiritual or heritage objects. Height approximately 37 cm. Width approximately 18 cm. France, late 19th – early 20th century.
