A vintage Italian Nuvolone modular sofa in rich rust-toned textured upholstery, designed by Rino Maturi for Mimo Padova and introduced in 1970. This three-piece modular sofa set is a distinctive example of 1970s Italian design, combining deep lounge seating, generous proportions and the soft, cloud-like forms associated with Space Age and organic modern furniture of the period.

The Nuvolone is defined by its unusually soft architectural presence. Deeply padded seat and back sections are divided by sculptural tufting, while the rounded sides flow almost continuously into the broad seat. The low profile and generous depth give each module the character of an oversized lounge chair, while the richly textured rust upholstery emphasises the folds, volume and changing light across the surface. Arranged together, the three elements create a strong rhythmic composition while retaining their individual sculptural quality.
Nuvolone translates roughly as “big cloud”, a fitting reference to the exaggerated, enveloping proportions of the design. Rino Maturi created the first version in 1970 for Mimo Leone & C., with period examples constructed around substantial foam-filled upholstered forms. Surviving examples appear in a variety of fabrics, velvet and leather, while the modular concept allowed individual elements to be arranged freely rather than forming a fixed sofa.
Condition
Good vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with its period. The textured upholstery retains a rich colour and presents well overall, with light surface wear and tonal variation from use. Minor age-related wear may be present elsewhere. The overall forms remain full and visually strong.
