is an artist from Hilversum, the Netherlands. Marcel was trained at the HKU in Utrecht. Marcel creates abstract expressionist paintings on canvas or paper using acrylic, watercolor, and oil paint.
Statement:
'As a painter, you can communicate through your paintings. You can convey a story or generate emotions through images. For me, paint, brushes, and canvas, among other things, are merely tools to evoke these emotions or stories and bring them to life. When I paint, my mind, as it were, guides these tools toward the final result. The moment I am in a painting ‘flow’, I slowly build up this emotion along with the story, and project it onto the canvas or other medium. At that moment, my brain conveys something that is occupying my mind. Naturally, I start a painting with a specific thought, but that can easily change during the course of the process into something unexpected that (strongly) takes over. I will always embrace that process and let it happen.
The final image I create will not be an accurate figurative construction of this emotion or story, but rather an abstract representation of it. It will relate to something that occupies my mind at that moment, at that time, in that period. It resembles a dream translated into paint on canvas with brushes and other tools.
In this regard, I am immensely fascinated by the similarity between macro- and microstructures in nature and how these can also correspond to structures unconsciously created by humans. Here, too, man is part of nature. If we, as human beings, better realize that we are nature, I hope that we will also treat it with more respect as ‘fellow species’.
I would like these emotions to be expressed in cheerful and/or aesthetically beautiful paintings. I am a positive person, and the result may simply be enjoyed purely.
