Nepali Shaman Mask made of Yak Leather Origin: Nepal, Middle Hills / Himalayas Tradition: Gurung / Magar Date: Mid-20th century Material: Shaped yak leather with natural hair Dimensions: H 30 × W 15 × D 9 cm Weight: 200 g Type: Shamanic ritual face mask Middle Hills mask Elongated Nepali face mask, shaped from thick hairy yak leather. The narrow eye slits, open mouth, and strongly elongated jaw give the mask a distinct spiritual and animal-human appearance. The natural black hairs are largely preserved, forming the face, crown, and sides. Shamanic function Similar hide masks are associated with the Gurung and Magar communities in the Middle Hills of Nepal. Within local shamanic traditions, masks function in rituals involving healing, purification, and protection, with the wearer embodying a spiritual presence. Such masks could also be hung in homes for protection. Construction and condition The reverse side shows that the mask consists of shaped hide and has no wooden core. The surface shows strong signs of wear, dehydration, discoloration, and localized hair loss. A simple hanging wire is present along the top edge. The raw, untouched condition has been preserved, making the construction and signs of age clearly visible.
