Rare Engraving / Lithograph "The Rough Stone" – Myth of Oannes & Masonic Symbolism – Limited Edition (2/25)
Superb original engraving/lithograph framed under glass, measuring 32 x 42 cm.
A singular esoteric work: The figure of Oannes
While the work bears the explicit Masonic title "The Rough Stone", its iconography departs from classical lodge imagery to delve into the foundational myths of architecture. The depicted character, emerging from tumultuous waters, has a right leg distinctly covered in fish scales.
This chimera is a subtle and powerful reference to Oannes, a Mesopotamian half-man, half-fish deity. According to myth, Oannes emerged from the primordial waters to teach early humans wisdom, sciences, and especially the art of building and architecture.
The Work of the Stone:
True to his role as a great initiator of builders, this mythological character is depicted here in full effort: he wields the mallet (will, action) in his right hand to strike the chisel (discernment) firmly held against the rock. It is a fascinating allegory of elevation, where the being extracts itself from its animal nature and marine chaos to order matter.
Very rare print: This is copy number 2 out of a very small edition of 25 prints worldwide (numbered 2/25 in pencil).
Dimensions: 32 x 42 cm (with frame).
Signature: The work is titled "La Pierre Brute" in the center and signed in pencil by the artist at the bottom right (the signature remains to be formally identified, it seems to read Jauthe, Joutte, or Janthe – a beautiful mystery for a connoisseur to solve).
Condition of the engraving: Very fine execution. Note the presence of a few small scattered foxing spots due to age (visible in detail photos), which attest to its antiquity without detracting from the strength of the drawing.
Framing: Sold with its vintage glass frame, in good condition.
A rare and atypical collector's item, ideal for enthusiasts of Masonic symbolism, alchemy, ancient mythology, or to enrich a cabinet of curiosities.
