About this seller
Private sellerProduct description
This is a fine example of Italian art glass, crafted on the island of Murano. The piece is a sculptural bowl, showcasing the celebrated Sommerso technique for which Murano glassmakers are renowned. Its organic, rounded triangular form and vibrant, layered colours are characteristic of the Mid-Century Modern era.
The bowl is constructed from substantial Murano glass using the Sommerso, or "submerged," method. This involves layering different colours of glass within a single object, creating a captivating sense of depth and optical play. A core of deep cobalt blue is encased in a layer of chartreuse green, which is then submerged within a final, thick layer of clear crystal glass. This technique, popularised in the 1950s and 1960s, makes each piece a unique work of art.
This vintage piece is in excellent condition, having been carefully preserved. The glass retains its original high gloss and clarity, with no cloudiness or significant signs of wear. The colours remain vivid, and the substantial weight of the bowl gives it a pleasing tactile quality. The smooth, polished surfaces reflect light beautifully, highlighting the internal colour transitions.
Versatile in its function, this object can serve as a sophisticated ashtray, a catchall for small items on a desk or entryway console, or simply as a standalone decorative piece. Its timeless design complements a range of interior styles, from classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary and minimalist spaces, adding a concentrated point of colour and sculptural interest.
