Product description
Murano glass lighter made in a geometric shape and attributed to Flavio Poli, diameter 12 cm, height 9 cm. Flavio Poli was born in 1900 in Chioggia and is known for having been a great Italian ceramist, designer, and painter. Poli is known as “the glass artist” for his contribution to the development of Murano glass, promoting a new style during the 1950s that became known as "sommerso style". In 1934, he began working as a glassmaker for the company Barovier, Seguso, & Ferro in Murano (which later became Seguso Vetri d’Arte), where he became a partner and artistic director. During these years of his career, he designed alongside Archimede Seguso, creating complex Murano glass lighting installations. In the post-war years, he conceived the sommerso glass style, a technique created by superimposing different layers of glass with varying color consistencies, thereby introducing thick-walled glass to the Murano world, which stood in stark contrast to the prevalent techniques of the time. This represented a very important innovation for the era, which earned him the Compasso d’Oro award. Poli is known and appreciated for the theme of the female nude, being the first to address this subject in Murano, where we can see it in his 1930s compote, featuring a central female bust functioning as a handle. Throughout his career, Flavio Poli designed various objects depicting diverse subjects, such as the massive glass animals he created for the Compagnia di Venezia e Murano.
