Mukalenge wa Mukalenge (Kinshasa) – “Ecstasy at Thilmade” No. 16
Sand Painting – Oil and sand on canvas, 70 × 100 cm, circa 1975–1985
A pioneer of Congolese sand painting, a revolutionary movement born in Kinshasa in the 1970s, Mukalenge wa Mukalenge invented this unique technique by incorporating natural sand from the Congolese soil into oil paint.
This rare work presents a granular, matte, and deeply expressive texture. A stylized, fluid, and dynamic body seems captured in a state of sensual and spiritual trance, enveloped in powerful curves and vibrant warm tones (oranges, yellows, greens, ochres).
