Beautiful "Shunsai" kokeshi by Usaburo.
"Shunsai" (春彩)—which translates to "Spring Colors"—is the name of this kokeshi.
This kokeshi features a dark brown to black body, decorated with stylized red petals representing plum blossoms (ume) or cherry blossoms (sakura) that bloom in the spring.
Usaburo Okamoto (1917–2009) is known as a pioneer of the *Sosaku* (creative) kokeshi movement in Gunma Prefecture. Usaburo began his artistic career creating industrial metal artworks before turning to the kokeshi tradition in 1950. He is considered one of the foremost masters of this tradition, particularly renowned for introducing new styles and decorative techniques that helped give rise to "creative" kokeshi—distinct in form and style from "traditional" kokeshi. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Premier's Award.
The doll comes with the box shown.
