Beautiful Koigokoro kokeshi by Usaburo.
This is "Koigokoro" (Passionate Affection), a masterpiece by Usaburo Okamoto, a leading artist of creative kokeshi dolls in Japan.
The design features a brown torso decorated with brightly carved, three-dimensional red and white plum blossoms, a modern sensibility that resonates within the traditional style.
Usaburo Okamoto (1917 - 2009) is known as a pioneer within the Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi movement in Gunma Prefecture. Usaburo began his artistic career creating industrial metal artworks and subsequently approached the Kokeshi tradition in 1950. He is considered one of the most important masters of this tradition, particularly famous for introducing new styles and decoration techniques that contributed to the birth of the so-called "creative" kokeshi, detached from a figurative perspective compared to the "traditional" ones. During his career, he received numerous awards, including the prestigious Premier's Award.
