Beautiful Japanese Ainu Nipopo doll.
This is a traditional Japanese Ainu Nipopo doll (also called Ainu kokeshi), originating from the island of Hokkaidō, Japan.
A Nipopo doll is a traditional, hand-carved wooden figure of the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido, Japan, valued as a good luck charm or amulet. The term "nipopo" means "small wooden child" or "wooden baby" in the Ainu language.
Nipopo dolls were originally made by Ainu shamans as abstract wooden figures that served as amulets to cure or ward off diseases in children. They were cherished as charms that protected the body from injury or illness.
The dolls are usually carved from wood, often from the Japanese pagoda tree (Sophora japonica).
They have a simple, stylized appearance, often without arms or legs, similar to Japanese Kokeshi dolls, but with their own unique Ainu style.
The dolls represent a connection to the ancient Ainu culture and reflect their artistic heritage.
The doll is made of hand-carved wood with painted green accents on the hat and base.
It has a distinctive wooden ring around the neck carved from the same piece of wood.
This is traditional Japanese folk art symbolizing good luck and health.
The height is 15 cm, for the condition please see the photos.
Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discolorations and/or cracks/dents to a greater or lesser extent.
